Kunsthalle Wien

simulating intelligence

2008

60 meters in length and 2 meters tall. a row of glass showcases mounted on the outer wall of the Kunsthalle is being transformed into an indicator for artificially operating intelligence. Quoting light-elements used in science fiction movies from the 70ies and 80ies (Knight Rider, Space Odyssey, Battlestar Galactica,..), an oscillating light signal patrols along the entire lenght of the building.

The moving light takes impact on the character of the building, evidently containing a technological spirit that seems to have a watchful eye.

Along the whole lenght-side of the building housing Kunsthalle Wien a lightsignal is oscillating horizontally, thus simulating a cognitive feedback loop – an infinite and also inoperable machinic circulation. This light-installation on artificial intelligence discusses its productivity, autistic mental processes and a machine‘s emanzipation from its creator.

Horizontally aligned showcases are equipped with complexly draped curtains revealing an organic aspect. The drapery also refers to another machine – inside the building – moving from pole to pole – the elevator – connecting the groundfloor with the first floor, which is also hidden behind a coat of draped fabric.

The elevator car moves on a vertical axis and works as an internal counterpart to the external light-pendulum. Cables, controllers and connectors are left exposed to show the connection and energytransfer between inside and outside.
